What Are the 4 Pillars of Breastfeeding Mastery™?

I felt like a queen the day I first realised the value of the MumBo™.

You know that feeling when, after years of working on something, your brain finally lands on a breakthrough and you think: “YAAAASSSS. Finally. I’m getting somewhere.”

That high was short lived.

When I taught the MumBo™ lens to my team of maternity nurses at Miskin Maternity, it was exciting, but it fell flat. Not because it was wrong. Because it was still too complicated to teach in a way that was replicable.

At the time, my brain was trying to hold too many combinations at once. I was attempting to teach how to solve breastfeeding problems across as many different mum and baby combinations as possible, and I could feel myself edging towards burnout. The girls were brilliant. They could see the value. But in my heart I knew I had built a powerful lens without a simple structure to carry it.

For years I tried different approaches and, honestly, a lot of them flopped. I got so disheartened I nearly walked away from it all to work in Waitrose... 'Would you like me to help pack that up for you?'

MumBo™ came first

Before the 4 Pillars came the MumBo™ — the unique mum and baby combination that everything else sits on within the Miskin Method®.

Then, while preparing to teach for Professor Renzo Molinari at the Institute for Women’s Health, I wondered something: What if the missing piece wasn’t more information, but a clearer way to organise what we were seeing?

Because the real problem in breastfeeding is not a lack of tips... everyone's got one!

It’s that parents, and sometimes professionals, can find themselves looking at symptoms without a reliable way to interpret what those symptoms mean in context.

A baby feeding constantly can mean several different things. Pain can have more than one driver. Unsettled behaviour can look identical on the surface even when what is happening underneath is completely different.

That’s where the MumBo™ becomes essential. I created MumBo™ to stop breastfeeding from being treated like a one-size-fits-all skill. It anchors feeding to the individual mum, birth, medical history, baby and baby's oral cavity. The Miskin Method® starts with that context because otherwise it is very easy for advice to become guesswork.

But even with MumBo™, I still needed a simple way to organise what was happening during breastfeeding itself.

The four things mums kept wanting

So I went back to the stories that mattered most. Not textbook cases. Real mums who didn’t need more options; they needed help understanding what was happening and what mattered most.

When I looked back through years of working with breastfeeding families, four things kept appearing.

Mums wanted breastfeeding to be Comfortable — not something they had to endure.

They wanted feeding to be Efficient — baby able to take the milk they need without feeds endlessly dragging on.

They wanted breastfeeding to be Sustainable — a feeding rhythm that could actually coexist with eating, showering, sleeping and being a human being.

And they wanted it to be Effective — with outcomes such as milk intake, nappies, milk supply and growth giving us evidence that feeding was doing its job.

Those became the 4 Pillars of Breastfeeding Mastery™: Comfortable, Efficient, Sustainable and Effective.

That was the missing layer I had been looking for.

Why the 4 Pillars matter

A breastfeed does not have to look like somebody else's idea of perfect. What matters is whether breastfeeding is working for this mum and this baby.

The 4 Pillars give us a structured way to look at that.

And here's the important part: breastfeeding problems rarely exist neatly in isolation. The Pillars interact. A problem with efficiency can eventually affect sustainability. Something that makes feeding uncomfortable can change the way a mum feeds. What initially looks like a feeding-pattern problem may need to be understood alongside milk transfer or outcomes.

That's why the 4 Pillars aren't four breastfeeding tips or four independent fixes.

They are part of the Miskin Method®, the breastfeeding framework I developed to help organise what we're seeing before deciding what, if anything, needs to change.

I use the 4 Pillars when teaching pregnant mums, creating personalised feeding plans, reviewing breastfeeding patterns and troubleshooting feeding difficulties. They also form part of the thinking underpinning LATCHED AI, where my frameworks are used to help mums organise and understand what they are noticing about their own breastfeeding.

Which Pillar is talking to you?

If breastfeeding doesn't feel right, instead of immediately asking “What should I do?”, try starting one step earlier.

Is feeding Comfortable? Efficient? Sustainable? Effective?

You don't need to diagnose the problem yourself. The point is to begin noticing where things don't seem to be working as you expected.

When several feeding problems overlap, continue or escalate despite basic adjustments, that's when personalised breastfeeding assessment becomes important. Rather than adding another generic tip, we need to understand the individual MumBo™ and the wider feeding pattern before deciding what needs attention.

I’m Geraldine Miskin, breastfeeding specialist, originator of MumBo™ and the 4 Pillars of Breastfeeding Mastery™, creator of the Miskin Method® and LATCHED AI.

If you want to understand where these frameworks came from, read How the Miskin Method® Was Built. And next, we'll look properly at MumBo™ — and why the same breastfeeding advice can work for one mum and be completely wrong for another.

LATCHED AI is a personalised breastfeeding education and support platform created by Geraldine Miskin. Built on the Miskin Method®, MumBo™ and the 4 Pillars of Breastfeeding Mastery™, it combines nearly 30 years of professional breastfeeding experience with personalised AI support to help families better understand their own breastfeeding.
